When DJ Akademiks defended Young Thug during his LGBTQ controversy

Earlier this year, Young Thug faced backlash after his comments about men being gay. He claimed that gay men “broke a rule of manhood”, as he expressed distrust towards them. In an interview on Perspektives with Bank, published on September 7, he said:
“I feel like once you break a rule from your manhood, once you rat or once you turn gay.”
He faced major backlash after this as the LGBTQ community slammed the rapper. However, DJ Akademiks shared his thoughts on the situation and defended Young Thug. He referenced Jeffrey, a 2016 mixtape by Thug, on the cover of which he wore a dress. The streamer said (h/t Hot New Hip Hop):
“A lot of people accused him of being a homosexual at that time. He never cared to really defend it. I think people who knew him personally, they were like, ‘No, he’s not gay. This is just art.’ I believe the LGBTQ community appreciated, even though he wasn’t homosexual, the openness and really the fluidity of some of the art he was portraying. He had no problem with it.”
DJ Akademiks explained that Young Thug’s statements came as he was accused of being a “rat”. He added that the rapper just wanted to assert that he isn’t one, adding:
“He felt the need to kind of say, ‘If you’re this, you’re just not a man,’ because he’s trying to capitulate. He’s trying to pander to the people who believe in street morals or codes. I guess the biggest is, if we’re talking about commandments, the commandment one is thou shall not snitch. And they’re accusing him of that. So, he’s trying to use every other thing to say, ‘No, I am that guy.'”
Young Thug, meanwhile, clarified that he has “nothing against gay people”. He explained that he only has an issue with gay people pretending to be straight men.
